So deep I dunno what to do

Hi,
I Owe Nationwide credit card £9000 they are just starting the court process. I have an active credit card with Sainsburys £3200 and a £2000 overdraft on my Abbey current account.

I am on incapacity benefit, have 3 kids and cant afford my household bills, The gas and leccy are on key meters, havent paid any water rates for 2 months, buildings insurance I dont have as I couldnt afford it. Mortgage is £400.

My wife and I seperated but she is paying half the mortgage and helping out with some shopping, we do get on quite well and want to keep the house for the sake of the kids.

I am at my wits end here and really dont know where to start trying to sort it out. Im also worried Nationwide are taking me to court and want to put a charge on my house.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks
Peter

i have a buildings and contents insurance policy for £10 per month. have a look on confused.com or similar. there must be a policy in your price range.

you are breaking the terms of you mortgage by not having it. and if anything happens to your house you will still have to pay the mortgage but have no house.

post a soa so that we can help you to cut your costs. there is a thread at the top of the page telling you how to do it.
  • O.k well don't panic there is help out there for you. The best thing for you to do is to prepare an SOA and post it on here - it is basically a list of everything coming in and going out and people will be able to advise you on the next steps to take on the road to getting back in control.
The companies that are recommended on here are CAB/National Debtline and CCCS (plus some other I can't remember) - they will help you for free and will act in your best interests - they will need an soa from you as well so it's best to do one. There are instructions in the thread for new posters I believe.
The most important things you need to pay are your mortgage, gas, electric, water, food and any secured debts you currently have.
Please do not worry, the companies you owe money to can't have what you haven't got and a charging order (which hasn't happened yet even) does not necessarily mean you will have to sell your house so please don't worry.
    Best of Luck

P.S do not worry about the state of your SOA - we have seen it all before and there are always solutions - just remember what's important - you have yourself and the kids.

I have to add my wife is helping with shopping and is currently paying £200 on the mortgage but this is 50% of her wage a month, she doesnt live here and she couldnt afford more anyway. She will try and do this until the child benefit starts to be paid.

    Thanks
    Peter

  • Sorry I also should add that Nationwide want the payment upped to at least £280 a month I think.

This doesnt include stuff like school trips, uniforms, goodies for the kids, me tking them out etc.

Sorry, might be obvious not used to this sort of stuff at all.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If you kids are under 18 then you would be entitled to child allowance and child tax credit. I get £72 and £42 roughly for just my little girl and I am on a higher wage.

You need to look into getting these benefits ASAP as these will help you lots.

Is your Ex only contributing £100, if you have the three kids with you as sole carer should she not paying some form of maintenance to help care for them?

Have you claimed single person occupancy for your council tax?

  • Specified income consists of child tax credit and incapacity benefit.

My wife and I share the care of the children, she has been a great help to me over the past few months with money and not being in the best of health myself I dont think anyone would benefit from a legal maintenance arrangement so we are sorting it out amongst ourselves.

I did go on the CSA website and from the details I entered they would claim around £25 a week from her so as I said £200 a month plus help with shopping and other expenses is sufficient, plus the kids beneit from us not being at each others throats and thats more important.

And am getting council tax benefit and the single occupancy allowance.
