students are taxed exactly like everyone else

so in this tax year 6th april 2008 to 5th april 2009 you are allowed to earn 6035 before tax is payable ... after that you pay 20%.
the tax free allowance is 'spread' throughout the tax year, so if you earn the same each month you get taxed the same each month.

the actual tax that is deducted from your wages depends upon your tax code... it should be 603L (without anything like Wk1 or M1 or non !!!)

what has you income this year been to date?
    what is your tax code?

On 20k a year you will certainly be taxed ... so if you earn 1660 per month you would expect to pay about £233 in tax plus about 134 in NI per month
  • The fact that you are a student has no bearing on the amount of tax you pay. This is a common misconception due to the fact that students who work do not usually earn enough to pay tax.

This financial year you can earn £6,035 before paying tax, however the allowance will be split over the year in your pay, so you won't have the first few months tax free. If you appear to be paying tax on all your earnings, then check you are not on an emergency tax code on your payslip.
