Blinds for a WIDE window?? Where to buy

My son and his wife have a huge window in their kitchen, just over 10ft!! My daughter in law would love a blind, not vertical, but the cost is crazy. I thought of 2-3 roller blinds but not sure if that would look right. It used to be a shop window many years ago and their home has no front garden so they want and need privacy at night, they have voiles so daytime is not a problem. I can sew and I am more than willing to help but what can I do as it is too wide for a roman blind. I had thought of sliding panel blinds but once again not sure if that would work. I suggested curtains but they're not keen. Any sensible sloutions please, NO not bricking up the whole window thats not an option!!

My kitchen window is larger than that, although it is made up of one central glass panel, & 2 smaller openings, so there is a little bit of UPVC dividing it up.

I've got 3 ikea blinds up next to eachother. There is a small gap (about 1 inch) between each blind, but you'd have to stand with your nose pressed against the glass to look through. I didn't want to spend more on blinds, as in a kitchen they get dirty.

I cannot stand vertical blinds. They should be restricted to offices,(preferably ones I dont go to) :o

Curtains could atleast be washed. Or how about panel curtains? Ikea also sells these, or there was a thread on here somewhere which had a link to a japanese blind company.

Or how about internal wooden shutters?

Failing that, she could have the bottom part of the window frosted.
  • Hi,

I am not sure if this will entirely help...

We have a few large windows. DS&DD1 bedrooms have a rollerblinds however they were really expensive (and at 2.3m not as wide as you are looking for) however they were custom made. We purchased through a local independant blind company if you were to speak to a company locally you might find that wider blinds can be made.

In the other rooms with 3/4m wide windows we have vertical blinds - they are a practical, flexible way of keeping the sun out/letting the light in (imo) I think most of the cost is in the mechanism. I have a friend who doesn't wash the slats - she just buys new ones "as they are so cheap"

Sorry non-standard windows although great are expensive to "dress" although I look forward to someone being able to prove me wrong :D
  • Try this company - they were very helpful to me (all I wanted was a metal bay window pole). They do made to measure - probably worth a phone call.

Another idea ~ sorry if its already been mentioned, not sure what these blinds are called. The people accross the road from us have a large bay window, instead of nets and curtains they have blinds that fold down in half ie when the sun is blazing thru there window they just drop the section of the blind half way down the window. They have approx 5/6 individual sections that are independant - when they are all down you cannot tell - it looks like a curtain.

Hope this makes sense.... if it doesnt pm me and I will look on the internet to see if I can show you.

I have really wide non-standard windows, and am not keen on curtains, so they have my sympathy!

My windows are UPVC, with one large middle pane and two smaller panes, one at either end. Obviously this means there is a strip of UPVC between each pane.

I got wooden venetian blinds from B&Q to fit each pane - ie one large and two small for each window. They needed cutting down slightly but that wasn't difficult.

It looks great, honestly. Also, I didn't realise how heavy and unwieldy the middle large one is - I cannot raise it without help. So from a practical point of view, having the two smaller blinds has proved a godsend when I want to open the windows.

I got a quote off hillarys for vertical blinds for a similar sized window (3 separate verticals as straight rails were cheaper than curved). We didn't go with them but about 4 wks later we got an offer of a reduced price through the post. So might be worth getting a quote off them if you aren't in a rush.
