What does "without prejudice" mean

A friend of mine left his previous job as they made his life intolerable. He tried to resolve it with them but they ignored his requests to meet. He then lodged a case with an ET.
The company has replied to the ET quoting selective extracts from letters he had sent in his attempt to try and resolve the problems. He had marked all his correspondence "without prejudice".
I always thought that meant the other party couldn't use the contents as evidence (which the company has) but that the sender of the "without prejudice" correspondence could reveal it to the court/ ET if they chose? If that's the case, should he mention this in to the ET?
Any advice gratefully received.

"without prejudice" can only apply to an offer of settlement, eg a letter saying "without prejudice, if you give me £500 & a letter of aploigy I will drop the case" cannot be used as evidence. whilst "without prejudice, on the day in question I was not at work because I was sick/on leave/at a customers site" could be used as evidence to show that he wasn't at work on that day.0
