I want to cancel my movies on Sky because they're on the whole pretty rubbish.
To replace them I want to do online rental DVD, has anybody tried this? I know there are lots of free intro offers which one is best? I would rather sign up for one good value/good service one that try tarting. Any ideas?
Sorry if there has already been a post along these lines and please feel free to move it if I have put it in the wrong place.

If you look on the Freebies thread, there is a code for lovefilm that offers a 2 months free trial. I have used lovefilm several times and they are usually very good. Blockbuster is another good one. There is a long thread on here somewhere about dvd rental but I am not sure where, maybe someone else can point you in the right direction. It is definitely worth taking advantage of some of the free trials before committing yourself to paying. Hope that helps.0

Would also recommend Blockbuster.
If you go into one of their stores and get a magazine as there's usually a code for a month's free trial in it.2014 Target;

Tesco's are excellent to use and are helpful if you have any queries. Avoid Sainsbury's - I signed up for their free trial and received 2 copies of the same dvd! Not helpful when I rang, especially when I asked to close the account. Although I shouldn't be charged anything I'm still waiting to find out as the billing date isn't until 11/1/06 - I have a sneaking suspicion problems may arise from them....!0

Martins Tips on Online DVD Rental.0 -
I love Amazon. I pay £9.99 a month for 6 DVDs. The choice of DVDs is excellent (which is important for me 'cause I'm not a mainstream kinda girl!), the turnaround is really good and I have had no problems with customer service. You also get 10% off any DVDs you buy if you are a rental customer.0

Online rental is ace. I literally went through around 6 months of free trials before I started paying for a service. Then if you cancel one, you often get offered a good deal like a month free to tempt you back.
Lovefilm, Screenselect and Blockbuster have all been great.
Have a look at this comparison site, very useful.0 -
Ive got a months free with screenselect, gonna cancel as they dont have that many films i wanna watch :S
Also if you like films sigh up for seefilmfirst, ive got 2 films to go and see in the next to weeks for free - gonna sneak my own sweets in lol0 -
I've generally been pretty impressed with online DVD rentals - I use Tesco. No more pressure to return DVDs by a deadline. It is quite enjoyable to hunt for DVDs to add to the list. Also when you look at the cinema listings this gives you ideas for DVDs to add to your list. Old movies that you miss on the TV is another source of ideas for your list as are strangely TV programmes - I was watching South Bank Show the other night with Eric Sykes - they were talking about a film called 'The Plank' - I'd never heard of it before but I was able to search for it and add it to my list. Another favourite thing to search for are old TV shows.
Watch out for bad disks though. We were hoping to enjoy Star Wars III over Xmas and had actually had the DVD for 3 weeks as not had time to watch it. By the time we played it half way through the disc stopped playing - turned out to be a bad disk. I had to report it as bad - and how have to wait to get it again. Luckily they sent another film from the list as soon as I reported it bad. Anyway, probably a good idea to check the DVD plays as soon as you get it - not sure how to do this though without watching it!
The other thing we found was whereas we signed up for 3 disks at a time we were in fact better off with 2 disks at a time as we don't have the luxury of time to watch them all (we have young kids who don't go to bed on time).
The other benefit we had was it was easier to persuade our 5 year old to wait for a film to come through the post than to have to buy her a DVD or rent one from a rental shop and have to return it or pay for it to be out for 2 or 3 days.0 -
There are some really good ones, but please be aware that there is a new one. I actually mean BE AWARE! WilkinsonPlus. You can choose which package you would like.
When you sign up to this one, they actually "freeze" the amount of money for the rental period. So they "froze" £14.47 that was in my bank account. Now I am freaking out that my Direct Debits will bounce until they "unfreeze" my money! This has now made me really paranoid. This has never happened before and I have done these trials before. Please be careful.....0 -
hi, we used tesco online dvd rental (which is powered by lovefilm, i think), we cancelled after a couple of months because we never got any of the latest releases regardless of what priority we gave our choices. It also takes ages to get any xbox 360 games...don't get my DH started about that! lol!0
