Finally My Time

After reading everyones diaries and posts, I have finally decided to come out the woodwork and tell you about me.

I am 21, living at home with parents, currently been engaged to my lovely fiance for 3 years, and early next year we are finally moving out!!! (Have to be rented, though!)

All this would have happened ages ago, but I have been unemployed for ages, but in September I finally found a job.

I stupidly lived on credit while I was unemployed. I have no idea why, I didn't have any real bills to pay... I was just living a life of luxury buying anything I wanted, even when I didn't want it!!!

I also wasted quite a bit of money on my fiance's business that crumbled in April this year. That left us with a little bit of debt.

I plan to be debt free by March so we can move out. I honestly can't stand living here anymore, but my parents are great, they let me live here rent free. I don't pay a penny towards anything, they are really kind (and perhaps foolish!)

I have finally realised where I have gone wrong, I am now strict with myself and do not buy things I don't need. I'm throwing all my weekly wages on my debt and it is so nice to finally see things shrinking. I have got rid of 2 credit cards in the last month!

I have never missed payments on anything, which I guess is good. I can't get any more credit at the minute though, so 0% cards aren't an option.

I have

£1480 Argos Mastercard
£1980 Virgin Credit Card (evil APR on this one!)
£470 Sky Credit Card

I have cleared Capital One (£490) and Barclaycard (£478) last month.

My partner also has a small amount of debt which he is clearing at the same time as I am doing mine. We are both working really hard and doing loads of overtime to finally shift this rubbish out our lives. I now refuse to live a life I can't afford. I will be sooooo happy when I no longer have to worry about paying credit card bills with huge interest rates. I am glad we have realised this now when we can afford to pay everything off quickly, rather than be stuck with no way of paying.

Ironically I am nothing like my parents, who never get anything on credit and have about £60,000 in savings.

They really would kill me if they knew the debt I had.

Sorry if I bored anyone, I bore myself!:T

    Hi

You need to look at the snowball on www.whatsthecost.com. This tells you which debt to pay off first, usually the one with the highest APR.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • Thanks for the adivce, I have looked at the snowball, but I would rather get rid of the smaller ones first, then I can cancel them and just focus on the two big ones. Its easier for me that way. Either way they will all be gone in a couple of months.

  • No longer moving out early next year. Found out on Thursday that my fiance has cancer.

He'll be fine but it has pushed everything back a bit. Money is the last thing on my mind right now.

  • Does anyone know if you can get statutory sick pay if you work for an agency?

My fiance was just about to get a contract where he works (they are still going to give him one) but he is still with an agency and I am unsure if they give statutory sick pay... and he really needs the money.

Forgetting about debt whilst being concerned about your fiance is understandable - but it won't go away - and making plans to deal with your debt will actually free you up to concentrate on him and his recovery. So - please don't abandon your initial plan to get your debts sorted - you can do it!
Debt free by 22 January 2009 - thanks to an unexpected inheritance - take heart - it DOES HAPPEN!

I am so sorry about your bad news - I can't answer your question - I think there are rules about how long you have worked and being paying NI contributions rather than contracts - but I am sure someone will be along soon to advise properly.
  • Thanks guys.

I am not ignoring the debt, just not so bothered about it at the moment.

To update, I have paid Sky off, now I only have Virgin and Argos to pay off. So all good. Wish I could move these to 0% though!!! But oh well.

  • Another nice update is that my mum and grandad have said they will pay for our wedding so we can get married next year. Very happy about that, it was a very overwhelming thing for them to do, very happy.
