Debt ghost from the past

Hi

I have been contacted today by a debt collection company regarding an unpaid debt from 6-7 years ago. I took out a loan in 1996 and it is my understanding that I paid off this debt around 6 years ago. The bank has referred it to an agency. This is the first I have heard of this in all that time.

I think it unlikely that I have retained a receipt for the cleared debt (having moved twice since then). Am I up the creek without a paddle? The agency have put it on hold whilst they check the records.

Any advice would be welcome.

As tinalives says if it's been six years or more since you last had contact regarding this debt tell them to go poke it! You are not legally bound to pay it!

Also get a copy of your credit record to check the deafult has been removed. Again, as long as it was 6 or more years ago!
