Went to Tesco today (1/12/2008) at the Mayflower Retail Park in Basildon to purchase petrol and have noticed that I have been charged 17.5% VAT on the fuel.
Should I have not been charged VAT at 15% as the rate has changed today?
thanks

The rate changed today.
However with fuel-
1. The government reduced VAT to 15%
2. Then put fuel duty up
The result is fuel costs the same as it did yesterday.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

The VAT invoice should still show the correct rate of VAT and how much VAT was paid - that's the law
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
it states 17.5% on the receipt and thats what they have charged. its only pennies but surely the principle is wrong!!!0

I bought diesel in Tesco today and my receipt states 15% VAT.
Your Tesco PFS should have changed it to 15% from midnight on Sunday.
But whether they have noted 17.5% VAT or 15% VAT you will have still paid the same amount.
If you bought £10 of fuel, it's still £10, whether they split it into £8.51 and £1.49, or £8.70 and £1.30.0 -
I work in Tesco and can tell you that its probably a small error on the till. There was such a massive update that the price updates on our tills on Sunday night took until 11am on the Monday morning, when it normally only takes around 1 to 2 hours. If it is an issue for you, you can go back in and ask for a manual receipt which they can issue you with the correct VAT amount on it.0
