Norwegian brown cheese -Gjetost/Ekte

Anybody know where I can get hold of this without paying extortionate, delicatessen type rates?

  • You can get the whole pack at Waitrose, but it'd probably be a similar price there to a deli - I think the last one I bought was £3 ish. The only other place where it might possibly be cheaper is if you know of any speciality Scandinavian food stores, a quick Google might bring something up. Or, if you're willing to buy a whole cheese (and Gjetost doesn't come in that big a block, and lasts for ages) then a deli might give you a discount. Bear in mind though that cheese (especially anything that's bought in Euros by the wholesalers) is ridiculously expensive at the moment, my mum owns a deli (not an extortionate one lol) and European cheese prices went up about 10% last week.
  • I don't know where you are based but the cheese stall in Newcastle's Grainger market sells it and is fairly cheap.

I love it. My brother works in Norway and thought about asking him to bring some bac, but it would probably cost more over there I reckon.

Mmmmm I'm drooling now. Gjetost and coffee on Xmas morning...

You can buy it at the deli counter of our local Sainsbury's, it's not especially dear there. The cheese stall at my local market sells it too.

Ohhh I love the stuff, a Norwegian boyfriend of mine used to bring it to me as gift when I was a young woman in Italy - it must be at least 30 years since I tasted some!

Ikea is the other place I've seen it.
