10% tax rebate confusion

I'm very confused over this promised rebate which I believe was supposed to start in September. Do I get it or not? Is it limited to those on benefits and /or low income or to all who were paying the 10%?

So far I've received nothing so maybe I'm not entitled.

Thanks in advance

For most people - it's not a 'rebate' - it's a reduction in the tax deducted, of up to £60, in Sept and £10 per month thereafter for the rest of 08-09.

But (one of your other posts today) as you appear to have been on Code NT for most of the year .... it won't apply. You need to be on a cumulative code for the extra £600 in allowances to operate as above.

No I've only been on Code NT for the last two months and the last time I worked was for one day ......July 3rd Supply Teaching and then finally decided to retire completely.

My pensions total to approx £16000 per annum gross.

Does the NT code only apply to your supply teaching job? If your tax code on your pension is L, you would have had the rebate in September from that instead (only get it once).

Are you over 65? If so you wont get anything sorry unless your gross income (after deducting gross gift aid charity payments) is around £28,000 to £29,000.

This is because the age related allowance (which is what you get once you reach 65) has already been greatly increased this year. Last year it was 7550 for people over 65 and this year it is 9030.

If you are on an NT code then it is possible HMRC have set some of your personal allowance aside to cover anything you may earn while supply teaching (although they shouldn't do this as it can cause problems). If you have retired from teaching, it might be a good idea to contact HMRC to ensure you are getting the full benefit of your personal allowance, however without any figures its difficult to say.

Thanks for your replies. Yes I am receiving the higher personal allowance.

I sat and worked out my tax AGAIN and they are overtaxing me nearly £50 per month. Rang the tax people but only those dealing with BR could check my figures and that's a three day wait!
