Urgent advice needed re bank charges

Please can anyone help? I have just seen that my bank have deducted over £200 in bank charges from my current account which has swallowed up more than a week's income so I do not have any money left to live on. To make things worse there are a few direct debits due out of the account tomorrow.

I am really desperate and don't know what to do. I can't dispute the charges because I went slightly over my overdraft limit and then it snowballed from there.

Ring the bank first thing in the morning, they may be able to cancel some of the charges, but it will no doubt depend on whether or not you regularly get charges for being overdrawn.

    You will have to grovel.
If you are registered for online/telephone banking, you could try ringing them today, numbers are usually on the statement.

  • No, I very rarely exceed my authorised overdraft limit but do know that whenever I have queried bank charges before, they have never been very generous and withdrawn them. I don't dispute accruing the charges, mostly in respect of direct debits that they paid that took me over the limit, but really do I have to pay all the charges at once if it leaves me and my daughter with nothing to live on? I just would like to know where I stand.
  • I've just realised that I have probably posted this in the wrong place. Please feel free to move to appropriate place mods. Sorry.
  • Bumpety bump.....in the hope that someone with a bit of inside knowledge can help me on this one please??? I am really worried.
  • You need reasonable living expenses, in most cases the bank will allow you to withdraw the money you need to live on..however you may be charged again.

The first port of call is bank in the morning and i would suggest taking along a full income and out going expenditure sheet with perhaps a suggested plan for paying off. I know it sounds extreme, but they are sometimes more willing to help if you are showing that you are thinking of ways to reduce it.

Another plan would be to change banks and get your wages paid in there, and make plans to pay off overdraft..again it would be difficult and you may have to contact a non fee paying charity for further advice on this.

If it is benefits being paid in i am sure that they have to allow you them as they are there for a reason..i could be wrong on that but have read others have managed to get these out in the past.

I am sorry i can't be of more help..others may be able to suggest more things
    Good luck.
