non-cumulative tax code

I have a job that I have had for the last 6 years. I have now got another part-time job and my payslip had my tax code on it, I think it was '603L non-!!!'. I wondered if anyone could tell me if this a good or bad thing? I hav'nt paid tax at all in my first month. I am worried I wont pay any tax and then end up with a big tax bill at the end of the financial year. My first job I will earn about 7k a year this year, so I assumed I would get a BR code and pay 20% tax on everything I earned there? I filled in a P46 on my first shift, and there has been around 3 weeks since then and getting paid. Any advice would be much appreciated. Danny

603L is what you would have if you had no other job. With a second job you should be on BR until the tax office sort themselves out. They will probably reclaim any tax you should have paid through your wages when they send the tax code through to your second employer.

So are you suggesting that in the next months payslip, I will have a BR code? I hope so. LIke I say, I dont want to have my second income completely swollowed up in tax for the last couple of months of the tax year. I assumed that as soon as I filled in the P46 then I would be on a BR code, but by the sounds of it, they have to send off for my tax code? Thanks

If you have ticked box C they should have put you on the BR code straight away.

I did tick box C. I might have to either speak to wages or contact the tax office then. I will see what the next payslip says.

Unless your next pay is due soon i would speak to them right away. The sooner it is sorted the better - you don't want to underpay too long.

From what I remember from my time working in PAYE, sometimes employers would put somebody on BR automatically, others would put the employee on a 603 - wk1/m1 tax code until HMRC told them otherwise.

I guess when your payroll dept gets the code issue notice, they will change your code and extract any extra needed at that point from then on, but i'd recommend speaking to your payroll dept, too, because some are pretty awful.

Thanks, yes I will do that. It is the NHS so I would hope they are'nt terrible! The bottom of the form says something like ''send this to tax office once NI earnings reaches threshhold'' or something like that. I was thinking, as you suggest, that they are waiting until they get confirmation from the tax office before using BR code, and then claiming back in future months. Thanks
