Disguising rice?

To be honest, some kids just don't like the texture of it and its something they may not grow out of (I'm a case in point). As a child I wouldn't eat more than a teaspoon of it and now I'm the same, there is just something about the texture which I'm not fond of.
Having said that, I have successfully managed to get a few kids to eat rice who said they didn't like it, I did this by introducing it with a different meal. I chopped a hard boiled egg, add mayonnaise, cooked sweetcorn and peas and then a couple spoonfuls of rice, all of the children I have nannied for have enjoyed this meal (but I don't).
Half the world's population depends on rice as part of their staple diet. They don't seem to have any problems.
I don't see why children should be fussy about food if they are fed everything as a matter of course. My daughter (16 months) and my son (6) both love rice, just steamed, or any other way.0 -
Just as an aside brown rice is used as animal feed in many countries in the world - the refined white rice is used for human consumption, but, and this is important, there is nothing wrong with brown rice apart from the fact that it has flavour and texture compared to a lot of white rice (jasmine and basmatii aside). I think most now agree wholemeal bread is much better for you as the beneficial stuff is still in it. The same is the case for brown rice too. White rice, like white flour is just pure carbohydrate - energy - but no vitamins. I've got my partner over to brown rice. It took a year but now he appreciates the flavour and finds that white rice bloats him. If you can keep on at it it will be beneficial.
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -
Yes, I agree, dronid - and also certain things just taste better with brown rice (at least for me). Like roasted winter veg in cheese sauce on brown rice, I couldn't contemplate that on white rice! But it wouldn't work well with a Thai curry....:-)"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

Have you tried germinating the rice before cooking it?
If you keep brown rice at 104 degrees (Fahrenheit) for at least 2, but up to 8 hours, it makes it healthier.
Haven't tried it myself.....0
