    interesting... three answers all different

Mine are based on taxation for UK people and it correct for Uk people starting work for the first time in December: it does, however mean you will pay tax next tax year (i.e. from April 2009) so be worse off ....

however, I'm don't know about non doms so can't comment about what cook county is saying.

    Hi NileBoy

If Clapton is right (which he may well be), it seems that you could be exempt from paying tax till April 09.

The answer I gave assumes that you will automatically be paying tax from your first payslip. The tax free allowance goes up marginally every April, which means that your take home pay would work out slightly more (don't get too excited though – we are talking only a few pounds!).

For a more definitive answer your best bet would be to wade through the information on the Inland Revenue's website below. If that's too confusing (very likely) just ring them up and get them to clarify your position.

Hello, well the university informed her that as long as we provided documentation we are married then we are both exempted from Council Tax :j

I am surprised about that! I recommend that you telephone your local Council offices just to make quite sure - better than getting a shock at a later date!
