W1 after tax code?

This week I was taxed, when i wasnt expecting to be.

My tax code is 355L and so far this year I have only earned £1000 (and since tax is recalculated weekly i should not have been taxed).

Up until now I have not been taxed and so when i was this week I compared my last 2 payslips- only difference is that on this weeks "W1" appears after the tax code?

Can anyone shed any light on the matter?

W1 is a non-cumulative tax code so although you are receiving your tax free allowances it is not looking at the whole tax year.

You need to find out why the W1 was applied. Ask payroll or phone HMRC. Have you had a coding notice issued recently?

It just suddenly changed itself which is strange.

Phone the tax office that deal with your employer.

They'll be able to tell you why your code has changed to non-cumulative, and tell you what info is needed to restore cumulative.
