I have just bought a second hand ice cream maker and am trying it out as I speak. It is the kind with the bowl that sits in the freezer overnight and attaches to a mixer for maker the ice cream.
My problem is that it says on the box that the ice cream will be ready to serve in 20 minutes....so far mine has been going an hour and a half!.
Not only are we gasping for our frozen yogurt dessert but also it still isn't quite soft serve consistency! I imagine that by now the frozen bowl will be less cold and may not even be freezing at all.
Have I bought a duff one or do ice cream makers usually take this long?
All suggestions/help gratefully received.
Cheers
Tess

Can you tell us what make it is ? This may be easier for someone with one the same to give better advice.
I have a Russel Hobbs ... Temptations one
You put the bowl in the freezer
Then attatch it together add the ingredients, ice cream follows
It usually takes about 5-10 minutes to get soft ice cream, maybe not quite that long. To get it 'thick' takes about 10 minutes

I've got the Magimix one (?Le Glace?). Same principle, freeze the bowl then attach the motor then add the ingredients. The instructions say 15-20 minutes is all that's needed, but depending on the starting temperature of the mixture, it can take anything up to 30 to 40 minutes to get to what they call 'Italian ice cream consistency' (ie. v.soft).
The instructions for mine say to freeze the bowl for a minimum of 18 hours, so maybe it's taking a while because your bowl wasn't quite cold enough?

Mine used to take about 30 minutes or so. I seem to remember that the instructions said to freeze the bowl for at least 48 (or it may have been 72) hours before using it the first time. It also works best if the mixture you are using is quite cold to begin with - I always put mine in the fridge to get cold before trying to use the ice-cream maker.

Thanks guys,
I froze the bowl for 30 hours before using it so maybe needed to freeze it for longer. The woman I bought it from said she had never used it so maybe I should treat it as new. Will try again but freeze it for a couple of days first to be sure.
Its a 'vivalp'. Never heard of it before but it says on the box made in italy for vivalp uk.
I will try and find an online manual.
Cheers all,

I also found that having the base ingredients cold helped. So make your puree/custard the night before, fridge overnight then start your machine and it will be sort of cement like after the 20 mins.0
