I love Waitrose, but do find it pricey, i tend to do my main shop at Tescos, but use Waitrose for all the extras (as its the closest to me, i have to pay a toll bridge to get to any of the other supermarkets, and we dont have any farmers markets either!!!). The food is normally excellent quality, and as some have said before, when they reduce their meat and fish, it is very good value. I have also noticed that they are now doing quite a lot of 3 for 2 offers which is good.

I also live`down the road` from Waitrose! Their staff are lovely particuarly to old ladies which I think is wonderful. Also I always notice the managers are more enthusiastic about helping and packing shelves. Also it is always CLEAN! Always worth keeping a look out for bargains such as bread rolls severely reduced.

    You may well become converted!

Maybe you'll get some opening offers with it being a new store? :) I love Waitrose, and shop there in preference to anywhere else. Although I do occasionally trawl the others for good offers I always end up vowing never to return, and to stick with Waitrose. Like the other posters I find that when they do reduce their meat etc it is still in really good condition and that's the time to fill the freezer!

I find that the staff in Waitrose are very helpful, it seems that they have far more staff around the shelves are always perfectly stocked. You do get what you pay for and for brand names they are more expensive. But where I live the tesco and Waitrose are the only supermarkets for about 10 miles so Tesco is always really busy. I would rather have a stress free shop and go to Waitrose. Although I do buy my meat from the butchers and fruit and Veg from the Green Grocers. After watching Supermarket Secrets I stopped going to Tesco.

Excellent shop, but make sure you go there with a shopping list and stick to it. I find the main problem with Waitrose is that there's a lot of temptation in the way of yummy cakes, fancy bread, interesting things on the deli counter, etc. etc.

And I would agree with all the comments about helpful staff - beats our local Somerfield into a cocked hat!

In fact, the only downside is Friday evenings, when it's full of Sloane Rangers stocking up for a weekend at their little place in the country... icon12.gif

I wish we had a Waitrose. As everyone has already said the meat and fresh produce is far superior and worth the extra but I would be tempted to get my cleaning and boring stuff once a month or so online using one of the codes on this site from Tesco or similar for free delivery. I'll just have to put up with Asda until Waitrose decide to venture this far west.

We shop at waitrose and it probably is a little bit more expensive than some other supermarkets.

They do reduce some food very well, my dad got just under 2KG of aberdeen angus beef for £14 it usually costs £30 It was the day before new years eve and they had to sell it or it was going in the mincer. So my grandama offered to do us a dinner so she cooked that and it was the most lovelly tender bit of beef ever.

I think in the 10 years that we have been shopping at waitrose we have probably had one batch of bad meat. Dad took it back and got another strait away.

One of my problems when I move out is that we probably wont live near a Waitrose and TBH I dont really like any other supermarkets meat/veg. I have not found anywhere that comes close except good butchers.

Also my best tip is if they put in quick check go for it. it does mean having to get a Waitrose/John lewis account card but if you go shopping on a sat or near xmas for a few items you will love the fact that you can do it in 2 mins instead of waiting in the normal ques.

  • Where I live we have both a Waitrose and a Tescos. The Tescos have been here about 2 years and I have shopped in both over the years but only pop into Tescos these days. As a single chap my grocery shopping is surprisingly consistent… How boring… hee hee. :p I cannot comment on any difference in the quality between the two shops, but what I can say with certainty is that with my shopping list Tesco is about a third cheaper than Waitrose.

    Hope this helps.

Waitrose isnt cheap but what I love is the choice and freshness. Believe it or not my main reason for popping into waitrose is for dog food - the only supermarket that do a range of organic food thats not been tested on animals - but tend to spend a lot more then planned buying their reduced items. Two weeks before christmas mince pies were being reduced from £2 to 20p when I was in :) Meat, poultry and fish is always very good and a treat is the fresh breaded cod or haddock from the fish counter - far superior then what I can get from a chippy

Sorry if this is a bit specific - but Waitrose do one of the best budget-price red wines I've ever tasted - Cuvee Chasseur at £3.09 a bottle, normally to be found on the bottom shelf of the French reds.
