Most cheap desk mics need to be really close to you to work well.
Often a headset with a built-in mic can be better if you want to use it for VOIP or online video conferencing etc.0 -
Good advice Lorian, the one Ive seen is a head set as well so should be ok0

I wouldn't normally recommend them for anything, but PC World use to do some quite good lightweight headsets with noise cancelling mikes for about £12. Not been in there for months though. Can't get them much cheaper mail order after paying postage costs.0

Hiya,
Instead of going to the pc shops looking for a headset / microphone, have you thought of going to somewhere like game?
This link http://shop.game.net/search.aspx (type in "pc headset" without the quotes into the search box and the 1st one on the list of results is for £4.98) and if you go into the shop with a student you can get an extra 10% discount too making it £4.50, but if there is not one near you the postage is only £1.50 which makes it still the cheapest option yet.
At that price you can see how you get on and if you like it and want to upgrade its not a problem.
The other alternative is perhaps a webcam with built in microphone. I have the logitec quick cam communicate STX from pc world which was £39.99 just before xmas but it was a BOGOF and its really a good camera and the mic is good too according to my friends who i use it with. £29.99 just now on the website for store pick up if you have one near you.
PC worlds cheapest web cam with a headset is only £14.99 (half price offer just now). Soz cant get the link to paste in here, its the logitec quick cam express plus in white. If you put the name into the search box it brings it up no problem.
Will try and paste the link into - grrrrrrrrrrrrrr to technology!!!!! It worked this time!!!!!

It's the first one on the list and dont forget to use rpoints for extra discount which i think you can use for both game and pc world if you are getting the stuff posted out. PC world will give you points for store pick up too.
Hope this helps.0 -
