Baking Help!! No Bicarb. of Soda

Help please! I'm having a baking week and have just been to Tesco's but they had no bicarbonate of soda...at least none that me or Tesco blokey could find!

I've got 2 recipes for cookies that I was going to do this afternoon, but both require it. What would happen if I bake without it?? I've not been baking long enough to know and I really don't want to go back out - I've only got a small Co-op within walking distance and I don't see them having it, and I don't want to go out with the kids in the car just to get it!!

Will it matter hugely? I've been so organised this week - its always the little things isn't that just get in the way!

Thanks in advance :o

  • hi there,

I would be really surprised if the co-op didn't have it. Alternatively, hf you have a chemist close by they will also stock it. The pharmaceutical version is the same as the cooking version and it is possibly cheaper.

When we first came here to live I could not find bicarb anywhere, they use Bread Soda here which I learned was the same thing. Now that Mr T is here bicarb has arrived, but I still use bread soda as it is so much cheaper.

I looked for Bicarb of Soda or Baking Soda in my nearest branch of the Evil Empire (sorry - Tesco) a few months back and was told they no longer stocked either.

    ?
  • they probably have baking powder even if no bicarb.
baking powder is a mixture of bicarb and tartarc acid (to acivate it) so will do the job just as well
