I think this debate is moot. I've just tried to sign up for this offer (despite my better judgement) but after entering all my details and clicking the 'submit button' I get -

Server Error in '/mirror' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File --><configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="Off"/> </system.web></configuration>
Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File --><configuration> <system.web> <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/> </system.web></configuration>

You may have received that particular error message but somewhere behind the scenes they've signed you up and another poor sod if faced with the misery of not knowing how or to which address you have to send a recorded delivery letter to to try and get out of it. Even when eventually you may manage to get the signal stopped they will still hound you over your cancelled direct debit even though they agree you don't owe them money.

My experience (several occasions!) is that cancelling a direct debit just leads to Setanta's system chasing the customer irrespective of the circumstances. Contacting them didn't stop the phone calls and demand letters.

The actions Setanta take after a direct debit is cancelled seem to be divorced from the status of the customers account- there may be valid reason for the cancellation of the direct debit or an issue may have been subsequently remedied, but the system just carries on auto-ringing and writing- demanding new payment details, imaginary outstanding payments, or, as I experienced, auto-cancels the subscription more than a week after Setanta fixed (their) error and I re-instated a direct debit instruction.
• I timed my cancellation with the receipt of my new credit card. Sent my cancelation letter recorder delivery telling them the card was finishing so they would be able to take the last month (you have to give a full months notice after you cancel, in T&Cs) which they did.

They rang a few times to offer reductions etc but I just avoided the calls and never rang them back. Then it went off the day my next payment was due and that was that. Can't say I miss any of it.

Can I offer some words of advice to anyone wanting to take up this offer.

Do NOT sign-up by credit card. You can not cancel the ongoing payment with your card company.

Take the direct debit option - you can cancel this with your bank. Write a cancellation letter, doing the following:
• Same letter / two copies (one goes to your bank and one to setanta)
• Send both letters by second class signed for service
• On the letter, physically write the tracking number to show that it's been sent via a signed for service.
• Email a copy of the letter to Setanta advising that it has been sent by recorded delivery also.
I had a similar experience to everyone on here and I'd setup by credit card. The good news is that GMcard were exceptional in helping me. They asked for the proof of the recorded letter and automatically credited my account with the subsription each month (backdating it from when I'd wrote to Setanta).

Great deal if you accept the hassle of doing this in the first place!

Explain yourself Mr. N. Loggin. :mad:
• Just been watching BBC Watchdog, and they said that they had received "hundreds and hundreds" of complaints about Setanta's poor customer service, and especially their cancellations procedure. :rotfl:
Thanks to all who post constructively.
