debt causing mental ill health

Hi there
I was about to post this when I saw Martins thread. I hope its understood that this one is different.

Like many people I am terrified in these credit "crunch" times of losing my job. My employer has a board meetin in the spring when they will look at out turns for 2009 10. They have to give projections for between 20 and 30 percent cuts. That would mean a lot of jobs probably i in 3 and i am so so so scared.

I think I will lose my job because my face does not fit and i am not particularly happy in the organisation anyway but i do do my very very best a nd always pull my weight, I have not got a poor sick record apart from an accident but my employer criticises my work - he doesnt cirticise others - and then doesnt give me a chance to make amends. I feel so unskilled in this job that I cant get another - I went for one and got an interview but htey are so few and far between and the job I went for - they didnt appoint - all the candidates including me must have been c****. I need the salary i have got but i feel as thoug my company thinks i am not worth it but i am in dire straits without it please please help.

I have debts of at least 25k and live with husband and daughter son is at uni he gets no grant is dependent on us. hubby knows i have debt doesnt know how bad it is.

we bought a flat in 2006 as well as our house = cos my job is miles away and i need some where to stay it has only one bedroom but it has reduced in value by 10 percent at least since we got it although we put down a deposit - paid by a loan - so it is apparentlly not in neg equity but it is really.

God I am so scared it is making me ill. I think about whether they would all be better off without me all the time. I am so scared I cannot think about good work to do to bring in income and sit paralised at my desk all day. So worried so scared and i am 52 and should be looking forward to retirement but i am miserable all the time.

Please keep posting here and you'll find lots of advice to help you cope. These are stressful times and you're certainly not alone in feeling what you've described. Rest assured your family would NOT be better off without you. You've got 2 properties so if the worst happened perhaps you could move to the flat and sell/rent out your house till times get better.

Try and sit down with your husband and tell him the truth about your debt.
It won't be easy but it would lift a weight from your mind. A lot of what you're feeling is probably because he doesn't know the full story.

You've made a start with dealing with your situation by posting here.

what sort of work do you do? Are there any things you could do to improve your performance at work? Are you more/less qualified than others at your work? Are you more/less experienced?

It must be expensive paying two mortgages. Would it be worth long term getting a job closer to where your husband is? You could sell the second place? Or rent it out? Even if you were to take a significantly lower paid job, would you be better off?

Just a few suggestions. Apologies if you've already thought about them, or have posted the answers elsewhere.

Hi, first off take a deep breath and take one step at a time.
If your company aren't making cuts till next year that gives you some breathing space.
I would sit down with your husband and have a good talk, you need his support to go forward from here.
If you're struggling to make repayments contact one of the free charities for help, you can do the cccs debt remedy online, no need to talk to anyone at this stage if you can't face it.
Try posting your SOA on here and see if you can get any advice on your budget.
Nothing is as bad as it seems and theres always a solution, you've taken the first step by posting your fears.
