Strange tax code,confused,please help!

I've recently started a new job,approx 6 weeks ago.
Its my first job for years, due to having kids etc.

When i received my first pay slip, the tax code on it is just B.
I earned £259,but ended up with £208,the rest being taken off as tax.

Just after i started,a lady from the personel dept, came to me with a form, and said, tick no2 and sign and date it at the bottom, which i did without even thinking about it!

After reading through a few posts on this forum,i think it must of been to do with form p46,which if this is the case, then i have ticked the wrong one,but not through no fault of my own!!

Will this make a difference?
I'm just totally confused and unsure what to do,should i just wait until next week, when i get my 2nd wage slip, and see what has happened?

Any help or advice would be greatfully appreciated.

The code is likely to have been BR not B. You have certainly been taxed at 20% on all of your wages which is what code BR would do. Is this your only job?

Did you read the form or just happily do what you were told?

P46 has 3 boxes - A, B or C. If you had ticked box B they should have put you on code 603L with Wk1/Mth1 not BR.

Have you received any Job Seeker's Allowance since April?

Fill out a new P46, tick Box A providing you have had no Job Seeker's Allowance and have no other job. Hand it in to your employer.

Next time it would be a good idea to read what you are signing.

She should have but often don't. Are you sure you didn't tick the 3rd box? That's the only reason you should be on BR.

It probably has in that you are paying too much tax. However it's something that can be fixed and the sooner you hand in a new P46 the better.

Here it is - downlaod it and print it out.

If the £259 is for 6 weeks you should not be paying any tax at all and should get a rebate automatically when you are on the correct code.
