What to buy in an Asian supermarket?

Hi,

I'm going to Bradford tomorrow with a friend and she's promised to take me to an Asian supermarket .. I've never been to one before. She got some really cheap frozen fish from there last time she went so I'll be getting some of that. Anyone got any tips on what I should stock up on?

Most def rice as its getting very expensive in the big 4!

well it depends on what you like? Narrow down your tastes a bit!!

Peppercorns and whole nuts like almonds are often cheaper in these places....as is Saffron....

The other obvioust things are bags of spices but it depends on how much you use....and of course coriander...:-)

Cooking for a family of 4, we love our curries though I'm not the greatest cook so ready made sauces go down well. Wanted to know what the best bargains are really, my friend also got some really cheap dried pasta in cartoon shapes for kids. Just wondered what other people get that they consider a bargain and make sure that i don't miss it!!

dont forget to buy pappadums.
u can fry them in oil or alternately make them in the microwave.
much cheaper than the supermarket ready-to-eat stuff.

Coconut oil for cooking and scalp/hair conditioning, fresh vegetables.

Cashew nuts are often cheap, and rice noodles too.

Ginger and garlic definitely cheaper. All kinds of exotic veg espec coriander. Daals and pulses. Canned chick peas (channa), kidney beans a lot cheaper than supermarkets. Snacks like bombay mix (chevda) in loads of different varieties at a much cheaper price. If partial to them, some Indian sweets - yummy and very like a sweet fudge or for a non alcoholic rum baba type try gulab jamun. Rice and chapatti flour is always cheaper. Big bags of nuts at a very reasonable price. Also if they have a butchers section, usually have mutton which imo is nicer than lamb. Also if you like joss sticks (agarbatti) you will get a much nicer selection which is more authentic. I also got a small bottle of cinnamon oil for under a pound which I use in the oil burner - yummy smell and very christmassy. Many asian shops also do a lot of middle eastern stuff and polish stuff. Dates and baklava also very reasonable.

We go to one ever couple of weeks to buy spices, they have a butchers at the back and frozen fish, the fish seems cheap but the names are not names I recognise, can anyone guide me on what fish to buy?
