. the garage can put it through as long as they do the work and it does not leave the garage on the day again

you can take it away as long as you return it before the end of the next working day but only for certain repairs.

They cannot offer the free retest if the car etc, fails we are finding this out now

So many people are just plain wrong on this issue.

    The rules have not changed.

It is still a free market and anyone can charge anything they like from 0.00 pounds to the Maximum price currently about 44pounds 1st test, free re-test within 24hours on certain items....or whatever..read the MOT t&c's for the exact prices and conditions.

The garages do not have to pay the D.O.T. anything just because they are testing a vehicle. There is nothing stopping them from offering the same prices & free re-tests they were 2 years ago if they want to.

if that's the case then WIG how come the failure forms have the prices set out. Not disputing what you're saying but it's the official form that gives the retest prices.

Kwikfit are idiots, told the gf that a new tyre for her car would be £80, I went in the next day and they told me £70?!?!?

There have been many horror stories on here before about them!

The prices have always been spelt out, on the wall in the office and on the back of the forms. These are the max prices allowed.

Ok I don't know about whether it was previously on the back of the forms, I never read them before. But they have always been posted in the waiting areas on the wall. And they have always said what the fees are and they have always said for example something like any re'test after this time and the full fee will be charged.

It has never been binding and it is not binding now.

too late for me anyway, was too lazy to get it sorted so need to pay.. bit of a bummer cos it's minor stuff apart from the hand brake that went 2 days before.

Here's the deal it's a pdf so will be slow to open:
    http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/publications/mot%20test%20fees%20and%20appeals%20poster%20(vt9a).pdf
Note top left hand corner (fees shown are the maximum fees)

If no-one shops around and everyone just continues to believe these lying garage owners (blaming the rise in fees on "new rules something to do with computers") Then we will quickly get to a situation where we will have lost all the concessions afforded to us before.

I fully appreciate it is up to a garage to charge what they want for MOT tests (up to the max), but to lie to the customer about why they are changing is out of order.
