I am originally from the Republic Of Ireland and a few years back took out a large loan for someone who had been refused. (My now ex boyfriend - should have known better) He promised to make the repayments which of course he failed to do and kept correspondence regarding the loan hidden from me until it got so bad that the loan company went to court to recover the loan. I have this under control now - have got rid of him but unfortunately am stuck with the loan. I am paying on this loan and will be for a few years to come. I am now living in the UK though and I am worried that this bad debt could affect my credit rating here. I have got a bank account, mobile phone contract and credit card with little difficulty but I am thinking of buying a house next year and I'm worried that the loan in the Republic of Ireland could so affect my rating that I will be refused a mortgage. Can this happen? Can loans issued in other countries affect your credit status in the UK? Please help!!
