I wanna big jar of bovril

Does anyone know where I can buy big jars of Bovril spread - I can only seem to get it in VERY small jars now from the supermarkets.

Kids and I love it on toast (much better than Marmite IMHO)

You either love it or hate it, i'm a Marmite person every time :D

Tried a local Cash'n'Carry or similar?

  • Costco sell it but in really big plastic tubs and that gets very messy with 3 kids dipping into it!!!

Why have the supermarkets taken it off their shelves - anyone know?

It can only be supply a nd demand I guess?

My local S'burys still do massive Marmite jars (we buy them!), but only ever see the tiny Bovril ones

  • Think I might have just found the answer on Unilever Website:-

13/08/2008 : Unilever UK has decided to take the precaution of issuing a product recall on Bovril Beef Extract 250g glass jars and 600g plastic tubs after routine internal quality checks identified traces of salmonella in a small number of products.

Still doesn't solve my problem but at least now I know why

  • Too salty for my liking. And I also read the other day that LEA's have withdrawn it from school dinners / breakfast clubs for high salt content.

Not sure about buying the plastic tubs of Bovril in Costco now either.
