is a second job viable?

Hi folks, I have recently been thinking about getting a second job. I'm not in debt, but I would like to think I could move out of my parents house before I reach 30.(I've just turned 27).
My main query is tax on a second income, how does it work. I'm guessing I still get taxed at the normal 20p rate? Or does it rise dramatically when you work more than a set amount of hours per week?
Any info appreciated. Thanks, Ian.
PS. I am aware that in the current climate just finding another job will be hard enough let alone finding one that's suitable for me as I don't have set days off.

Your income tax liability relates to your earnings, not the number of hours you work. Provided your annual taxable income is under £36k, you will pay 20% tax on a second job and the first £105 of weekly pay will also be exempt from NIC's.

  • Thanks for the useful info. I earn 17k in my current job so need have no concerns about extra tax. Just got to see if I can find something suitable now.
    Thanks :D
  • If it's not too late (and in the field that you want) try applying for temporary Christmas jobs. They often offer flexible hours.

It will give you the chance to experience what its like to work 2 jobs at once, and if you're lucky you may even get kept on after Christmas. If not, then at least you've gained some work experience and knowledge of what it's like doing 2 jobs.

    Good luck

ps I'm in same position as you, 26 and still at home! I'm thinking emigrating is the way forward!
