I am relocating, what is Windsor like for house prices at the mo, Lx3 said it was one of the few places that are still rising... Property bee suggests some are not.
Any advice on where to live or where not to, interested in windsor town, old windsor, Englefield green, egham etc.
Also what is the plane noise really like?
Will rent for 6 months before looking to buy, but just wanted a head start with info.
Cheers

Can't tell you much about the property prices other than now is probably not the right time to buy and you should research your market very carefully before committing.
As for the aircraft noise there is good news and bad news.
The bad news is at the moment Heathrow has two runways 09 and 27. These are labelled L/R for left/right.
The runways are around 600metres apart within the boundary of the airport and the left hand approaches to both these runways (09L+ 09R) mean the approach comes in directly over Windsor.
The good news is they switch takeoffs/landings to the other ends of the runways half way through the day (at different times) so you you are only tormented by the noise for half a day.
Don't take my word for it look on Google maps.....
A couple of years ago I lived in Hayes which in terms of distance is much closer to the airport than Windsor. The difference being that Boro is at right angles to the runways so gets no overhead noise.
There is also of course a proposal to enlarge Heathrow with a further terminal and another Runway...If you can choose another area reconsider. The entire area is well served with transport links.0 -
I live in High Wycombe but have worked in Windsor,- nice town but has always been exspensive. I could not afford to live there.
As for noise - not to bad over the town but some of the villages nearer Heathrow can be a problem. Good idea to rent at first.0 -
Englefield Green is full of students for Royal Holloway. Egham is a bit of a curates egg (the BNP used to have a big presence there, no idea if they still do).
Old Windsor is nice IMO. Eton is lovely too. Central Windsor is a pain because of all the tourists but nice apart from that. Ascot is nice except when the racing is on unless you get your kicks watching drunk people having al fresco sex and weeing in the station. Slough is a dump.0 -

No plane noise in Uxbridge. Will rent for 6 months before looking to buy, but just wanted a head start with info.
Asking prices are still massively deluded. 30% off last August's price is the absolute MAXIMUM you should pay.0 -
i stayed in a hotel in Old Windsor in the summer and the planes only really disturbed me early in the morning
however i couldnt live with it all the time and i live in the flight path for edinburgh (obv not as busy as heathrow tho)0 -

does old windsor get as much noise as new windsor? It does seem a bit cheaper for buying/renting there.
Cheers for advice.0 -
Have a look at this link - it will explain the Cranford agreement
They have runway alternation - but only for landing aircraft.
Most of the time planes take off to the west - they don't want planes taking off towards central London. They only take off to the east if the wind is too strong to allow a westerly take off.
We live further to the west, and aren't really bothered by aircraft noise - though still on the flight path, there is a non directional beacon that the planes use about a half a mile from our house.
The only plane we really heard - and it was a conversation stopper (literally) - was Concorde - it flew over our garden to the ndb.

windsor is a nice town, no idea on its housing stock though. driving through windsor great park you do see alot of planes but they are pretty high by this point and i wouldn't say the noise behind double glazing was particularly noticeable.
Good advice is to rent first to see if i) you like the area and ii) your relocation might not go as well or to plan and you may not stay.0 -
Asking prices are starting to drop round here and most noticeably towards West Windsor. In terms of 'nice' areas Central Windsor, Eton, bits of Datchet are all good, I don't know old Windsor that well but it seems ok IMHO.
Other areas to consider might be Iver, Iver Heath, Eton Wick.
The flight path issue does seem to affect pretty much everywhere to some extent but I don't think its too bad in Windsor ( worse in Slough & Datchet and absolutely terrible in Colnbrook !). The other noise factor to consider is the M4 -depending obviously on how near to it you are.
Average asking prices for a two up two down terrace in Windsor walking distance to town centre shops bars etc were well in excess of £250k in Windsor earlier this year but are now coming down to under the £250k mark. Larger properties around this price are now available but in not such nice areas or such 'pretty' houses and a bit further out from train stations etc.
What sort of thing are you looking for ?0
