WH Smith Returns during Christmas period

I got given the same book twice for Christmas - asked in Smiths last week and they said that normally they only take back books with a receipt however as it is Christmas they will take back without a receipt but you can only change for a book of equal value or take a gift card. The book had originally been bought for £10 but the current till value in Smiths was £13 so I managed to gain an extra £3.
I dont really shop in Smiths much otherwise I would be sorely tempted to return the large spanish dictionary I bought recently from Amazon for considerably less than its price in Smiths at the moment).
Not sure when this policy will change - fairly soon I should imagine - so if anyone has any unwanted new books that they want to exchange for a gift card (can be used on Newspapers and magazines), then now is the time to do it.

this sort of thing is exactly the reason why honest people who lose receipts can not get things returned for genuine reasons
i had a lot of trouble in tescos with a faulty camera unfortunately ild thrown the receipt because it was a food shopping one and they were very adament
luckily iv worked for whsmiths for years and know the procedure with faulty goods0
