From the way you say the guy was acting it would appear that he may be a newbie, although thats no excuse!
If you do make a complaint, ask for a transcript of the call, which will show ecerything said and whether he did put you on hold or not!
Having said that, I work in a call centre, and have seen many a clerk hit the hold (or worse, mute button) but not actually press it hard enough so the caller is still on the line!

do you not get a 14 day cancelation period for any new policys as i took out one Tuesday as i had a car Given to me too and needed to insure it in my name not o/h and the man said i have 14 days to cancel the premium if i changed my mind?Waiting to win an ITV competition.....:A0

thanks guys, seems to have turned out well (hopefully!) but i'm glad I posted it incase someone else has it happen to them. Is definately in my top ten of stupid phone call incidents.0
