Any advice will be gratefully received. :D

Our house gave up spreads about 3 years ago, now we use laughing cow light , hommous or basically anything spreadable instead (jam etc).

Once your used to it, there is no going back!

I love clover and vitalite, but to my shame I couldn't tell you if they have trans fats in them.
Clover is just 'oooooh'. Next best thing to butter.

flora claim they are extremely low in trans fat.
For many years now we have striven to keep the sum of trans and saturated fatty acids as low as possible in our products. New technologies have been developed that enable us to offer virtually trans free (less than 1% trans fatty acids) spreads.
    MYTH
ALL SPREADS ARE FULL OF TRANS FATS
    TRUTH
FLORA SPREADS ARE VIRTUALLY TRANS FAT FREE

On the other hand, butter naturally contains trans fats, as well as saturated fats. As part of our commitment to improving the nation’s heart health, we’re committed to ensuring that the trans fat content of our products remains as low as possible. Both trans fats and saturated fats increase your levels of ‘bad’ (LDL) cholesterol, but trans fats are the superbaddies as they decrease your levels of ‘good’ (HDL) cholesterol too.

What about an olive oil one? I seem to recall olivio was nice enough? And is it benecol that actually helps reduce cholesterol? Haven't tried that one though.

No GM, dairy, or e number stuff etc etc, http://www.puredairyfree.co.uk/

Not cheapest but the best for avoiding odd additives

Flora Pro-Active tastes nice and "fresh", and we use
Flora Buttery in things like mashed potatoes. HTH.
  • Flora is ok as per flavour, as is Olivio. I gave up on marg ages ago apart from in some baking and at my weekend job, I use either small amounts of real butter or Lurpak Lighter spreadable, because it has minimal ingredients. I am less concerned about trans fats etc than I am at the amount of unecessary gunk that goes into various marges. I bought some Vitaquell the other other day thinking I would give marge another go and it was just plain claggy and nasty tasting - I used to eat it years ago so either my taste buds have changed or the recipe has !

I stopped using margarine as a spread about 6 months ago as I tried loads of different brands and came to the conclusion that I preferred the taste of butter.

I still bake with it, though, and OH can't eat butter due to lactose intolerance - we're currently using Tesco own enriched sunflower spread, which apparently tastes quite nice.

As far as I'm aware it has no hydrogenated fats in it, so I'm guessing minimal trans fats (I could be wrong, so don't quote me on it!).

We occasionally have Pure margarine, which is really nice, but only when it's on offer!
  • DS is allergic to dairy so we need to use dairy free marg for cooking with. We like vitalite best for taste - it says no hydrogenated oils and virtually no transfats.

Pure seems to be good to but we don't like the taste as much and it is more expensive
