Why Do I Have To Pay Tax !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all,

I'm a full time university student and just started working part time ONLY on Saturday's for just 6 hours at a retail shop in London. on the interview I have been told that I will get paid £6/h which means I will get £36 a week or £144 a month!

When I checked my bank account noticed that I have been paid only £4.85/h in a total of £29.1 a week !!!!!! When checked my pay slip noticed that a tax has been paid of £1.15/h !!!

My first question do I have to pay tax even though I am working only 6 hours a week ? if so, can I claim the tax back on this, and how much would i expect?

Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice

cheers

Because you are on a BR tax code

    is this your only job?

is this your first job... if no did you have a P45?
if yes then did you fill in a P46?

Your employer should have a P46 for you to fill in.
It's all a little time consuming as you give it to your employer who may need to send it to their payroll department, who then send/contact the tax office.
SOMETIMES it helps to telephone your tax office (sometimes on your payslip) with your NI number and your employee tax reference and your employee number stating that you are a student and unlikely to earn more than your tax free allowance.

HMRC will not come into it. Your employer has the authority to operate either emergency code or 603L on a cumulative basis according to which part of the P46 you sign.

  • If you checked with your employer you may have put so many exclamation marks on the P46 that they could not understand it either!!!!!!!
