Hi all.
I 've been told to avoid johnsons baby toiletries as they contain loads of chemicals and to buy something like burt's bees or similar but these are quite expensive. Another recommendation was waitrose baby range.
What are other peoples thoughts and experiences? I have brought one bottle of baby wash whch is frangrance free and for sensitive skin so at least i have something in.
I know water is only to be used initially but for how long?
thanks in advance.

Babies don't really get dirty. Water is enough to deal with most things, except the most explosive poo, when sometimes a little soap is a good idea
A nice bar of organic sensitive soap or the same in liquid form should do it. I rarely use anything other than water on my boys hair, even now (6 & 2), but girls with long hair obviously need some conditioner or they will scream the house down.
A pot of sudocrem works wonders for sore bottoms & other bits. If you are breastfeeding & have some Lansinoh to hand, that works just as well.
The rest makes them smell nice, & you really don't need a lot. Very little ones can be moisturised with olive oil, & I've found that works best for cradle cap too. It works, but doesn't smell all that wonderful. All you really want is one bottle of yummy smelling baby lotion & even then you use very little. I've got some of the little me tangerine stuff from boots. I'm still using the same big bottle for nearly a year!0 -
I agree that water is all you need most of the time, but on occasion, especially now the weaning has started you need some soap. We use ridiculously expensive handmade naturals (http://www.handmadenaturals.co.uk/) range. It is costly but the nappy balm is magic!!! We bought one and me and even my OH have ended up using it for various things- handcream, lipbalm etc... Also it does seem to last well.
I have such funny skin that I don't want to use any petrochemicals on my LO. I go with the philosophy that if I don't know what something is on an ingredients list then I don't buy it that goes for food for me and OH, and LO;s food and any skin care etc..It can be expensive but I don't drink or smoke so its my treat really.
I did notice that asda (and prob all supermarkets) do a natural organic range that when I looked didn't seem to have any nasties in but it was only a cursory glance so not sure really.0 -
Well I bought a bottle of ASDA baby shampoo nearly four years ago that's still going strong. In general the supermarket own brand stuff is fine - all you'll really need is baby shampoo, baby bubblebath and a tub of sudocrem. Oh, and plenty of cotton wool (Wilkos used to sell a large roll for 99p - not sure if they still do).0

You won't need anything for ages, my dd is 3 and we only use shampoo on her she uses palmolive handwash when she washes her hands. But no bubbles or even bodywash mostly still just wash her with a flannel and warm water. Cant remember when we 1st used shampoo on her but she must have been a few months old. She had a bit of cradlecap that cleared up after using some sweet almond oil on it.
Sure I read not to use anything you couldn't eat, not because they will eat it but more because there systems absorb everything, So I still use as little as possible. Have some baby bottom balm (waitrose) for the odd bit of dry skin but thats mostly it.Booo!!!0 -
I agree with most of what has been posted. My DD is 20 months and we only wash her with water unless she has had a really messy tomato based dinner where she tends to turn a bit orange  . Then we use a natural soap without SLS, parabens etc in. We like the green people range because it's organic too but there are others that are cheaper.
Don't get sucked in to believing that just because it says Natural or Organic on the label that it is. It is just marketing hype. You really do need to look at the labels. Having said that you shouldn't need to worry for a while. My eldest DD is 4 and we only use shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste with her, all of which is organic and free from nasties.0 -

I also mostly use cotton wool and water on both my little ones, however sometimes I will use Horns and Halos all over body wash if I want them to smell sweet.0
