Applying for JSA

Whilst applying for jobs and waiting for interviews DD2 is applying for JSA. She has been given form JSA1(S) to complete and it asks her to decide if she is claiming contribution or income based. How does she know?

For information she was last employed from November 2005 to July 2007 working about 10 hours per week whilst at school

She is unlikely to have paid (much) if any NI, so she will need to complete the whole form (i.e. giving all the financial information requested), in order to apply for income based JSA.
    Gone ... or have I?

Contribution-based JSA is payable depending on the NI contributions she paid in the tax years 2005/06 and 2006/07, these tax years will change in January 09 (to 2006/07 and 2007/08).
From your info I would suspect that she hasn't paid sufficient NI conts in the relevant tax years to qualify ,so I would advise that she claims both contribution-based and income based JSA.

If she is not sure it is best to claim for both. Obviously if you claim for incomes based JSA you will have to declare your capital and probably will not get any jsa if you have savings over 16k. Any savings between 6k and 16k will affect her jsa.
If she has paid enough NI contibutions over the passed 2 years she will qualify for contribution based JSA and will can get JSA for up to 6 months regardless of what savings she may have.

Thanks for the very quick responses. I'll get her to complete the whole form before her interview. She doesn't have any savings, she was a student so all she has now, having dropped out, is debt
