I hope this in posted in the right place, if not I apologise.
Im wanting to cancel my fitness first gym membership, its £30pm, im a student and thought I would be able to afford it but I cant! Its with Fitness first on a 12 month contract, ive had it about 2 or 3 months so far. Has anyone had any experience of trying to cancel their membership with fitness first?
Thanks
Kirsty

Good luck! I can't even cancel mine and I've been with them over a year. I sent a letter saying I wanted to cancel it and they took it out the next month. I phoned them and they said I had to go in and fill in a cancellation form which I did. They did not give me the reciept of this and I didn't think to ask but I have been told on the phone that its on record I filled out this form.
They then took it out the next month again and the next 2 months. I have phoned them countless times and been in 3 times. Everytime they give me some excuse or don't phone back. When I went in today the servers were convienintly down. I even cancelled my direct debit through my bank and they (fitness first)told me it had been restarted again when I phoned up and asked why the money has gone out AGAIN! I have spoke to the manager and she was no help either. This has been going on since November and I'm not getting anywhere. They owe me 3 months worth of membership.
Has anyone got any advice please, i'm at the end of my tether!

googled this and this company appears to target students and are used to not giving in....wish an investigative reporter revealed their practices.0

Not just limited to fitness first either - my ex and I were members at LA Fitness and both cancelled our agreements - mine was finished no problem, but they kept trying to take payments from him, even though we both cancelled our agreements on the same day.
6 months after he cancelled he got a letter from them saying that he owed them 6 months worth of fees and that they were taking him to court. He got it sorted out with a few angry phonecalls, but i think it would definitely be worth putting your issues in writing to them.
I think threatening them with reporting to OFT/TS would be worthwhile as well, and definitely try to claim your money back that they have taken. They had no right to unlawfully deprive you of your funds (you can use that one for freedid that once when work "forgot" to pay me and suggested I could wait 15 days...)
Get EVERYTHING down in writing and don't take any !!!!!! off them - this is something gyms do in the hope you'll give up on giving up and carry on paying them your monthly fee (and partly I think because the people who are dealing with it have no idea about financial arrangements) - be very assertive with them and let them know you're not to be messed around any more!
Good luck!0 -

It might be tough to get out of this if you've agreed to 12 months - do they offer any lower monthly memberships? e.g. an off-peak one? If so it may be worth asking if they'd consider downgrading your membership to this for the rest of your minimum contract? Explain to them that you're having unforseen financial difficulty?
I think as you've signed an agreement you'll be liable for the remaining £270-£300, as this is technically a credit agreement (I think - correct me if I'm wrong) always worth having a word with them to see if there's any chance of coming to an agreement or settling it?0 -

One other idea is to try and find someone else to take the membership over for you. If you are a student, you could try advertising it on the notice boards at your college/uni? The advantage for someone else taking over an existing membership is that they don't have to pay the joining fee that is often charged - they just carry on the monthly payments.DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244
