advice re lowell debt collector

sorry if in the wrong forum folks
in september this year got a letter from lowell debt collectors regarding a debt owed to 3g from dec 2004, I had no idea I owed anything to them and cannnot recall any letters from 3g asking me about payment, it was only for about £30, i paid them as soon as i got the letter but now they have put a default on my credit report :eek:
will this defaulty have adverse effect on my ability to get credit and if so how do I go about asking them to remove it
