means that the account is being referred back to thwe Council because they cannot get anything from you.
Since you have been paying the debt off the threat of prison is just that a threat. Prison is for a very few people who absolutely refuse to pay at all.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thank you RAS... I will try to pay every spare penny off it, even if it is just an extra £2 a month.
Thanks again.

I think you are right. I transferred ownership of the car so that the only things they could levy against are the trampoline in the back garden and the wheelie bin!!Think now may be the time to talk to your councillor?
Will email my councillor tomorrow to see what help he can give.
Thanks again.

I wouldn't put it past them. I have known Rossendales (let's name names) levy against wooden trellis, plant pots and a rotting garden seat!
'Insufficient goods' comes into play at this point.0 -
Does this mean that:
a) They will no longer send me letters
b) The council will try to send me to prison
I am a little worried about this as I am a single parent so prison is not an option. Also, they never once called at the house in person to collect or hand deliver any letters - not sure if that was worth mentioning but...
Now you know why bailiff companies send these letters....TO SCARE YOU..and it WORKED.
There were approx 3 MILLION Liability Orders for unpaid council tax last year. Many against people who are not working and or single parents. The criteria for committal is either WILFUL REFUSAL (yes we do have 2 clients who have been into prison for this and both WANTED to go to prison as they are anti council tax protestors.
Second, is CULPABLE NEGLECT. The easiest way to describe this is where you have just returned from a fortnight in Disney or the Caribbean INSTEAD of paying your council tax.
The debt will now be returned to the council with a NULLA BONO certificate. This is latin for nil effect.
You MUST continue paying the council but you MUST get a full breakdown of charges from the bailiff co. They have not levied on goods so the maximum fees can be just £24.50 if they have visited once and £42.50 if two visits have been made.0 -

That's awesome. If a bailiff levies against a plant pot then when they turn up, folks should hand them it and ask for a receipt. Then phone the council - the people working in their recovery department enjoy good comedy just as the rest of us do.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

Yep, back when I was doing bailiff work, I processed countless arrest warrants but I can't remember hearing of a single one of those ending in committal. These letters that warn about prison for non-payment are technically true but it was always virtually impossible to get thrown into jail for council tax unless you "asked for it" one way or another. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -

They have not done a home visit yet but the total number of postmarked letters received has been 83. None have been hand delivered. Will they send it back to the council but at an increased amount for all the letters posted to me?
Each time I make a payment to the council, the balance had reduced when I got a balance check on the automated line and the total balance has only ever been the liability amount less payments made. Should I keep a watch out for an increased amount?
Sorry if that sounds a bit dim.
Thank you for all your responses. I am at a low ebb with the financial mess and I guess that is why I paniced so much.
Thanks again everyone.

The Council can apply for a Liability Order against you in respect of the Council Tax arreas and yes ultimately that can lead to committal to prison but only very rarely.
It is a tactic used to scare - as long as you are paying off the arrears and don't miss a payment, I do not know of any magistrates court that would commit you to prison. Those who are committed to prison are those who do not pay anything and those who want to go to prison.
I am sure you will be fine and you are doing the right thing by making regular monthly payments.
Good luck hun0
