I'm losing my job because I was off ill.

Ok. So what do you expect them to do? Nothing happen until you return?DepressedMunkie wrote: »I totally understand the opperational needs to get someone to helpThey have done nothing wrong by getting someone else to do your job, manage your staff and take your place while you are off sick.
agreed. You say you were off with depression, what would have happened if you had come back to work and had 8 weeks of work to catch up on?
Judging by the state of my department that's exaclty what's happened.
 <shrugs> They can do it
 Its not unfair.

Legally, judging by the responces probably. Morally, not in my book.0

I think you have edited this post but I'll just reply to what is still there.
You are not actually losing your job because you were ill. You are losing your job because they realised whilst you were off that your role was surplus to requirements, and could be fulfilled by other members of the workforce.
I do have sympathy, but it is just an unfortunate situation that demonstrates that none of us are indispensable.Gone ... or have I?0

But you say that someone else is doing your job, so that can't be right.

A company is more than individuals worth.
You were gone 8 weeks, I have sympathy, but they found a way to function without you.

Morals don't come into it. The economy is in a mess, I don't know of any company that is not struggling to some extent. Business is about good practice (within the boundaries of the law), and this is the principle that your employer has applied.Gone ... or have I?0

Obviously they're not as good/commited as me Taking someone elses responsabilities is one thing, keeping on top of them whilst working a 60 hour week is another. Taking someone elses responsabilities is one thing, keeping on top of them whilst working a 60 hour week is another.
I totally agree with your points although some are obviously hard for me to take. I used to do everything they asked of me, without question, 7 days a week, travelling all over the country, risking my personal relasionships all because I wanted to go far in the company.0

Its not your call on whether its being run poorly etc, its the management. They seem happy with it otherwise they would have welcomed you back open arms?

It's not my departement anymore, so your right, it's not my call. I am, however entitled to my opinion, which I believe to be correct based on how I ran it. Although I haven't mentioned this, the GM has absolutly no understanding of my condition, and I feel he'd replace anyone because of it as he see's it as skiving - we had various connversations in the past about other members of staff in the exaclty the same position as me now.0
