MOBO/CPU question?

Hi All,

New to pc building and am looking to build a pc hopefully for resale (small mark up mind, maybe £50 if that is possible - advice on this would be good).

Now as i am new to building, i've spent many an hour trying to understanding motherboard and processor compatibility...i think i have found a reasonable priced pair, but was wondering whether i can get a similar compatible spec priced slightly lower.

The motherboard is: Asrock K8 Upgrade VM800 400FSB, DDR400, SATA150, RAID, AGP, 2 x PCI, 10/100 LAN £35.19 Aria Part code - MB8-ASR-K8UVM800

The processor is: AMD Sempron 3000 [1.8GHZ,754]R 64 Socket 754 64bit )fan & Heatsink Included) £60.22 Aria Part code - CPU-A-S-3000AB-R

Both from www.aria.co.uk

Now i know these are cheap already, but my basic machine totals to about £240 without a monitor or operating system (to build) and don't think that i would make a sufficient mark up to make it worth while? Basically - just a little extra cash to help pay off my debts - plus computing is a big hobby of mine, so time wouldnt be an issue as i know i'll enjoy doing it.

I hope this post doesn't break any rules, and i look forward to your comments.

best regards

It could work out cheaper keeping an eye out for the offers on the Dell website...for example just a few weeks ago they had a base unit selling for £175.00 which if I remember correctly was a Celeron 2.6mhz, 512mb ram, 80gb hard drive and the more important bit a legal operating system....get a deal like that and them sell it on :)

To build your own you got to remember to include an hard-drive, case (possibly power supply if it doesn't come with the case), memory, CD/DVD drive, and floppy drive (if necessary)...then add between £60 - £80 for a legal copy of XP home.

Thanks, all in (well without a monitor) i've manged to include a DVD-RW, Floppy, 120GB HDD and a 4 in 1 special case from Aria including a PSU, keyboard, mouse and speakers...plus legal operating system, totalling just over £300.

Good idea about the dell ones tho, has anyone had much success reselling these, even if its only an extra £50 a month, it all helps to clear the debt ;)

As a side note it can be quite tricky to build machines at around that price. As mentioned by roger, Dell do some very good deals that would probably be more beneficial.

If building your own machine I find it becomes beneficial with a budget of around £400+ (not including monitor). For me I like building all my own machines so I know what goes in them, and so that I can choose the best make/model for the money available. There was a time when you could build your own machine and save money, although at present this is much less so.

It's a good way of learning though. For a more risk free way of making some money, fixing machines can bring in £20 or so here and there. As you'll notice on this forum there are many people still learning about spyware/viruses/etc...

Always check the PSU that comes with the case is up to the task. It may be a low wattage, or just as important, a low voltage on the 12v rail. An under-specced PSU can cause stability problems that are hard to track down.
