Storing sauteed onions in kilner jars?

I sure hope this is possible!

I've sauteed 7.5kg of onions in butter until their translucent.
My freezer is already about to burst so I thought I could sterilise some kilner jars, pour some hot sauteed onions into the hot jars, place rubber ring in place and shut the jars.
then keep the jars in the pantry.

Would this work? I know nothing about canning!

Don't think it would, sorry. You need sugar, salt, vinegar or other preservative to keep food at room temperature long-term ;)
