    Thanks.
It appears then that there is no course or anything like that that I can take then. Are there any companies that anyone knows of that have people like Martin working for them.

Another idea I have is to do a bit more research on this site ect.. and get some flyers round my area

I do not want to discourage you but if you are going to advise people on financial matters and charge for this then you will probably be asked what financial qualifications you have to give this advice.

Martin is a qualified journalist with years of experience in financial reporting etc. so the fact that he is not an accountant etc is not really relevant for him.

Depending on your age of course, i would recommend you approach your local careers advisory/jobcentre service in your area. You could have a look through this site to see if it gives you any ideas as to the way forward.

OK let me see if i can help a little.

First of all it depends which bit of my job you're looking at. Let me split it into two.

    1. Helping people with their money.

As it says on this site, I am currently the UK's only professional MSE. There are many other money experts, but my speciality is best products and beating the system.

As for how i did this, well I made the discipline up about 7 years ago as a professional journalist. So as to how to do it? Well you're on your own for that one :)

However there are a good number of people who look after people's money for a living including

Independent Financial Advisers: This is the best paid version, they look at peoples investments, mortgages, protection products and pensions and help them decide what to do best. If you're interested look at the big companies like Chase de Vere etc to see their career plans. This is a very commercial industry though and you will be part of the financial services industry and all the constraints that come with that

Debt Counsellers: The CAB and Consumer Credit Counselling Service and others have counsellers which help people in debt crissis. A very valid career path, but NOT very well paid (and often volunteer base)

Others: Accountants, solicitors, mortgage brokers, all help people with their finances too and are good to help. Of course bank workers financial advisers (not independent) and debt managment agents do as well, however these are generally more sales people than real helpers in my view.

    2. Being on TV/Journalism

I worked in the CIty, then qualified with a postgrad diploma in broadcast journalism in 1997/8. Im a very big fan of these courses, though they're tough to get on, you need some work experience first.

Its important to note they dont qualify you to be a reporter, they teach you about TV/radio (or print if you do that one) both for being a reporter and/or behind scenes producer.

After i'd done that i worked as a money/business journalist in the BBC Business Unit for a couple of years, then i went to a small TV channel and ultra-specialised into the Money Saving Expert role which i've since spent many years developing, researching and building.

Getting on TV isn't easy, I've been very lucky, its possible, but I genuiinley believe it a mix of talent, luck and major amounts of hard work. However if you're 21 and want to go for it, then providing you take it seriously and dedicate yourself to it, it's perfectly possible.

    I hope this helps

  • Perhaps the key to Martin's success is that he built a better mousetrap. (Thought you were on your hollys Martin?) :hello:
  • understand and agree with what you're saying martin.
Thought the "make me rich" series was excellent , there's been lots of coverage of it on here , eg. bit samey,,,,23 minutes not long enough .. too much glossing over "other savings " etc . but basically you came over very well.

Really hopeful you get another series ... the population clearly needs more and more money education. Plenty more mileage for you on that program yet .

nb ... need a new calculator .. that one was very visibly scraped ... inevitably due to excessive handling !! .
I've got the silver one ... not a mark but used a lot !!. from "Next " i think ?

( bring back "Simply Money" !! where at least there was time for thorough detail and good conversation on all the issues and topics. )

i've just unfortunately made some very negative comments on another thread about the dreadful "5 o'clock show" that started tonight.

Very interested in seeing what the new bbc series is on thursday " pay your mortgage off in 2 years" ...

Sincere best wishes for 2006 martin .. keep up the good work.
Massive supporter of your work... pleased to say i do every single money saving idea that there is ....

ps .. still sometimes a cracking offer ... the greasypalm £50 cashback on home insurance and £70 on car insurance with lloydstsb.
    (just done my £25k motor for £218 net and £350k house& contents for £230 net !! )

Its helping people with their money that I really want to do, the big company finances doesn’t interest me as much as, but I'm going to check out Chase de Vere site now.

Money saving for people I think would be a great carer as you know people are always paying over the odds for everything from mars bars to mortgages.

Thank you Martin for replying, more then I ever could have expected, I think from what you have said I need to continue my own research into beating the system for myself and others and the just see how it goes, unless you are thinking of opening a Junior MSE position which I could apply for.
