Imho money saving tips are more needed in a recession so a pox on the government as it's all their fault anyway so Martin's advice to spend wisely is needed even more.

They spend our money on our behalf like it's water down the drain, so we must help ourselves.
  • Accepted the title of this article was 'tongue in cheek', but surely now more than ever this site & Martin's Money Saving advice is essential to us all. It we can keep ourselves 'in funds' - or get ourselves to that point, rather than in debt, we will all have a little bit of disposable income to inject into the economy during and after the recession and that collectively will be better for the economy than all of us up to our eyeballs in debt and not able to spend at all.

For me, the 'sound bite' towards the end of the blog pretty much sums it up - A company’s job is to screw us for cash, our job is to stop them.

I live in hope that the economic crisis will encourage more people to pay closer attention to what they spend. Maybe rip off britain can be put behind us and consumers can start seeing some real value in our shopping/services. It is unfortunate perhaps that it's likely to be smaller firms that suffer the most while the industry giants wait out the lean times then continue bleeding us dry.

I think to save the economy this site should stay and we should get rid of the clowns in government and establish new leadership.
  • No need to close at all. If the 3 generations in my own family are anything to go by 3 people are money savers born and bred the other 3 are completely oblivious to what is going on. so if that is reflected throughout the country the government will get their wish. I just wish my endless nagging got somewhere in my own family

We all need to learn a better, more frugal and honest way to live, and that includes everyone from Flash Harry at the top to humble homemakers at the bottom. Spending constantly money we haven't got is partly what got us here. Your site helps change that mindset.

A bit late joining this discussion. But don't feel guilt ridden Martin. Spending what we didn't have got us here. The idea of continual growth is just another example of 'the greater fool theory'.
And this site is needed more than ever, I'm now working 'as required' and I can only see it getting worse. How do I budget when I don't know what my budget is? The last thing I need is to spend money I haven't got.

With 7million users this probably Britans most important web site, and is needed more than ever to help everyone make ends meet.
    Martin should have a knighthood.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.
  • Coming late to this discussion & having read the replies, I know it was only tongue in cheek, but NO, MARTIN, NO! It is so useful to all members of society - those not in debt and those (like myself) struggling with debt & looking for the best ways to get out of it.
Thank you Martin for your tips & I will get there one day! :xmassmile

    Hi,

Late agian but here's my twopenneth.

Now is when the country need this site the most - the companies are getting worse at screwing every penny out the poorest folk in our society now they r realising that their past means of screwing folk have landed them in trouble so now they find even more devious and disgusting ways to do it.

This site is our biggest comeback - I find myself shouting at friends to look here when I've told them time and again it saves you money and they're silly not too - I get really cross when they don't listen.

The govt could help this by offering people financial advice but why would they - they don't want us to financially savvy just easily led; they don't care that individuals lose money only when big busines does and the quicker everyone realises that the better.

I love this site so much my 7 yr old dd teases my husband about how much I love Martin Lewis cos his pictures always on my computer!

Following our esteemed leaders teachings....................How about the banks / credit cards etc repay all the greedy over the top charges then we could all go on a spending spree - yes some banks will go bust but tbh they are probably the least reliable ones anyway!; )
Happy with any wins this year :A
