R40 Forms go where?

I have been given an R40 form to reclaim tax back from a savings account which deducted tax in error, but nowhere can I find where to send it back to. Has anyone had to fill in one of these, and if so, where does it go and how long does it take before the refund is made?

  • Send it to your local HMRC Tax Office - see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxback/claiming-back.htm
  • It depends ... if you are employed then you would send it to the tax office that deals with your employer as they will hold your tax records. If you are not employed (or have a company pension) then you would send it to the Claims district dealing with your area (you can find this out from the link above in Chippy_Mintons post. Your local tax office is not always (and is not usually) the right office to send it to.
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
  • Thankyou both, you are wonderful people.
