    Hi :hello:

    Welcome to the forum

Try the letter below, do be careful though about mentioning BR / IVA, you may well scare them, that's the last thing they'd want to hear:

    Dear Sir/Madam

    Re:− Account/Reference Number

I would like to inform you that I am having difficulties raising the monthly repayment of XXX due to My Our PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES. I am seeking help from DEBT CHARITY NAME [Enter name if you are, or just delete] and intend to shortly produce a statement of affairs / repayment plan.

While I seek advice, can I ask you to suspend enforcement action on this account for at least 28 days, and also charges and interest?

I am aware that you have a good reputation for going beyond the Banking Codes minimum requirements to deal sympathetically with individuals in trouble.

Can you also send me any policy documents / information leaflets etc you produce for someone in my circumstances?

    Yours Faithfully

    XXX (type don't sign)

  • Hi Martin I understand an IVA but what is a BR? We are trying to get my father out of debt. he is 62 never claimed a penny from the dole or sickness in his life and has just been thrown out of work. He refuses point blank to claim the pittance dole and has used up his last savings trying to keep up with his huge debts. Credit cards and a bank loan to buy all his children and grandchildren presents and help us when we were in difficulties. Now we are all in good solid jobs and are going to pool our spare money monthly and write to his creditors using your very much appreciated advice. Our oldest brother is due a large windfall in September and will pay them all off then, offering them a reduced final settlement. If they do not accept our offer dad will have to go bankrupt and he is in an awful state at this prospect. Should we mention this in our first letters to his creditors would it help????? Thanks Martin

    Hi

Welcome to the forum, you need to create your own thread in order to receive the correct advice.

I'll reply here briefly, an IVA is only applicable to a very very small % of people, BR = bankruptcy and is something that requires very serious advice.

When you create your thread post up what debts you dad has i.e loans / credit cards and a rough idea of the total amount.

Does your dad have his own property or is he renting?

  • Thank you Martin. I think I have created a thread but not sure what it is.
Dad is renting from a housing assoc. He has no assets car etc and owes about £30,000 dad was well paid and was forever paying for good family holidays and sending us all to Australia to see our Sister he thought he could pay it all off in the last 3 years of his working life. So its up to us now. He has already asked his Halifax to freeze his interest on there card and stop the overdraft letters with a curt reply NO! Thank you Halifax for making an old man sucicidal!!!!
please let me know how to create a thread Martin as I have never heard of this Thank you

    Hi fifi

If you click here take a look 1/4 page down on the left you will see "New Thread" click on that and create your own thread.

One thing I'd like to ask, how old are your dads debts?

  • Dad has had an Egg card with insurance protection since 2000 for original borrowing of £2.500. This was done over the internet.. he forgot his password and just kept on paying it. then last week he finally managed to get in touch with them and found to his horror that he still owed £2.500. He immediately cancelled his insurance and I am going to wtite to them now to try and reduce his payment and to ask them as they have had so much out of him to freeze the interest. Dad lives in a housing assoc property.
    Thanks again Martin

    Hi fifi

Firstly, let me confirm, I'm not Martin (I wish I was) I'm just a member of this site.

Intresting about the insurance, are you and your family up for a fight with these debts Vs Credit cards / loan companies, or do you just want to pay the balance and be done with it.

If you're up for a fight with them, it may well be a battle, but it's a battle that could pay dividands in the end.
