previous employer tax error.........what do i do?

Ok, try to be brief but its a bit confusing! i staterd working within an estate agency last yr in the lettings dept. After 1 yr they moved me into the estate agency.In may i noticed no tax was taken & i got £4 rebated. I thought ( as i am one of those who pays the tax, not understanding it tho!) ok end of tax yr thats prob right! However next mth no tax again. I contacted work &their accountant said your boss is the only one who deals with it so we cant check it out until they return off holiday. As i am paid monthly my boss came back 4 days before wages were due so couldnt sort it out un time & yes no tax again - 3rd month! I rang the tax office in the meantime who confirmed as i knew i should be paying tax & i now owed them around £300. Annoyed i told my boss this & they promised to look into it. They did & said apparently someone at the accountants had put me through as on lettings therfore it seemed i had nt worked for 1 month hence the £4 rebate - but the bad news was i owed £280. I said well take it next pay day as things like this worry me - i like to be sorted! Sad to say it still hasnt been sorted out & i still owe the tax. Finally my boss sold the lettings & i have gone to work for them so will be getting my p45 at the end of nov. I want to know if there is anything i can do now? My tax code is 603L & i am guessing if i leave things until april then the tax office will detect the tax owing & either want me to pay it immediately or amend my tax code? It has annoyed me as i have done everything to get this debt paid & feel i have done something wrong!!

  • As soon as you get onto a proper tax code as noted above and you give your new employers your P45 it should be sorted automatically as tax is calculated on a cumulative basis. So if it isnt sorted at the end of Nov by the current employers it should be sorted in the first month of your new job.
