W H SMITH bit misleading

I went into WH Smith today and picked up a set of books for a tenner,.

down at the till the lady in front of me was buying £50 worth of stuff.
Her money came up on the digital screen, then a sign saying 20% off everythng. great. We got on talking how much of a saving that would be.

mine came up the same £10 then 20% of everything so i expected to pay
£8.00 - didnt happen, when i got out of the shop i looked at my receipt
and it said goods £10 - 20% off everything - 0 = total paid £10
so i went back in and the lad says, ' oh no madam, the 20% doesn't start till tomorrow - it tells you that on the flyer i have just put in your bag.

Now isnt that a no no. Could nt help myself but i just gave him the books back, got a refund and I'll go back in tomorrow and also speak to the manager.
did you thnk i was right.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

without seeing the sign, it's impossible to comment - it may (or may not!) have had a start date on it that you did/didn't see...... even if the short sign on the till didn't mention it, i'd guess the store was full of other ones that will have done....

the upside is that you could immediately return them and can buy them tomorrow cheaper - not sure if it's worth speaking to a manager since you will be actually making the saving.....

thanks melancholly, as said in my post i did indeed give the books back at once. I will go back tomorrow and re-buy them.

My point really was that it shouldnt really have been flagged up on the till
    until tomorrow.

I think the flyers are "scanned" at the checkout before being put in the bag with your goods and therefore would appear on your receipt and the display on the till

Is it a "General" 20% off everything - or a 20% "voucher" off your next purchase ??

  • i think these are all over the country now - seems to be 20% off most things except cd's/dvd's

I got mine a week before it was valid

I agree with Phoodless, the 20% vouchers are scanned by the till operator and put into your bag, and appear on your receipt, so it probably wasn't being shown as an a offer but as an item on your shopping.

There are terms and conditions - the last one I had was 20% off most stuff, 10% off some others like cds but didn't apply to some things like newspapers.
