Money From Magazines

Options
Apologies if there is already a thread on this somewhere...

In many magazines you can get money if you write a letter and it is featured in the next issue or if you send in a photo/tip/story anything really.

I was thinking we could perhaps get a thread with a list of the contact details of as many publications as we can and what they pay for what sort of contribution and then see how successful we can be at getting our five minutes of fame :)

It's fairly easy if you aim at a publication with low to medium publication.

In the library you can get a directory of media which will give accurate advertising details about all magazines so you can see what kind of audience is reading them - age, interests etc, publication details.

I managed at the first attempt with People's Friend, My Weekly, Natural Health and Wellbeing, Bridge, Dollshouse World.

I was unsuccessful with -Chat, That's Life, Yours (lots of segments to get paid), Readers Digest, Woman and Woman's Own,. Tv mags, puzzle mags because they have a high publication rate.

Remember that you are unlikely to hear back and might get paid 4 -6 months later if it's a letter, joke tip, photo. So will have to look at the magazines each issue to see if you have been published so you will have a copy of your work for a clippings file.

You need to read lots of copies of each magazine to get a feel for the content and writing styles of the letters etc.

    Good Luck everyone.
  • It sounds like a lot of time and effort for someone to choose. They are not normally over £50 either, are they?
  • I thought about doing this a couple of months ago but never got round to it.

I ripped out the contact pages from quite a few magazines and have them stashed somewhere so I'll hunt them down and post the info here.

Cheers, I will try and get some addresses myself and then edit the original post to include our info.
  • About 7 or 8 years ago I had a letter published in Best magazine and it netted me £50 :j

I did have to wait quite some time for the cheque to arrive but they did pay me.

I have never felt the urge to write to a magazine again but given the incentives I should give it a go really!

  • You can get £100 by sending your money saving tips and name & address to The Sun:

captaincrunch@the-sun.co.uk or Captain crunch, The Sun, 1 Virginia St, London, E98 1SN.
  • I got £15 from What's On TV last year, for sending an email about a programme that I had enjoyed (think it was the Ewan McGregor one). They emailed me back and asked for a photo cos they wanted to use it at the bottom of the letters page where 3 people give their opinions on a particular show.

OK, so £15 isn't that much, but for very little effort it was nice! And it didn't even cost me the price of a stamp, because it was an email! :T
