Hello everyone
I have decided to make some life changes, which is why I am here. I'm a fashion conscious student and what I would like to do is make some of my own clothes! I'm currently looking into buying a sewing machine for personal use. I want something small and compact that isn't overpriced.
I have seen a few machines in TJ Hughes (brother, singer and toyota) and am wondering if anyone has any experience with any of these manufacturers for sewing machines.
Thank you0 -

I don't know what to make of this place they seem too good to be true so if anyone has bought from them they might say

Good luck with your search.0 -
I bought a new sewing machine about 4 years ago (I had a brother for about 20 years before that).
I bought it in John Lewis and the lady there was very helpful, it depends what you want to use it for.
I looked at the cheapest - it looked great - the sales person asked what I wanted to to do with the machine (curtains etc) and recommended a heavier duty machine that would be able to cope with heavier fabric, which was a bit more expensive than my original choice.
I took her advice and haven't regretted it. It was their own brand - I can't remember who the actual manufacturer is.0 -
Hi,
I've two Singers I inherited, my mum always loved her machine she got it in the 60's and it's still going strong today it was obviously made when machines were made to last, although I don't use it as much as she did, a lot of small independant shops still sell old machines and can advise as well0 -

Please don't buy from this person, either direct or through ebay. I have lost count of how many posts I have read on the Sewing Forum and various email sewing discussion lists from disappointed customers. I am trying to find her feedback on ebay and will provide a link if I can. In the meantime have a look here http://www.thesewingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=6113&mode=linear&highlight=Joys#post6113
If you have a sewing machine dealer near enough to visit why not consider a second hand machine? It will have been serviced and probably guaranteed for 6 months or so, and you may get a higher range model/ better make for much the same amount of money. You should always try a machine on some of your own fabric scraps - do not rely on the stuff provided in the shop.0 -
Be careful of JSM distributors.
There's considerable number of negative reviews of this company on the net, in particular in the eBay guides."carpe that diem"0 -
You just beat me to it Addiscomber!"carpe that diem"0

If there's a Singer dealer near to you, they usually have good reconditioned machines at very reasonable prices..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
