Thanks for the replies. I popped over to the sewing forum and asked the same question over there as well but it's not as fast moving as this one so may have to wait for replies.
I live nr Dover, Kent. There is a sewing supplies shop in the town and they do sell sewing machines (mostly Brothers I think) so will pop in and see if they have any 2nd hand ones - that's a good idea. Thanks!
I've narrowed the list down to 3 models now:
Singer 7463
Brother BC2100
Janome 4623
so if anyone has any experiences of these 3 I'd be grateful. I've got to buy quickly though - I have a PILE of things to finish for Christmas. I was hoping to get a new one in the New Year (my birthday is in early Jan so was going to combine presents) but hadn't counted on the old one dying now - most inconvenient!0 -
have you tried John Lewis, just thinking if you
are buying new, their after sales is very good
they seem reasonably priced and delivery
is free.:j:j:j0 -

Also, I understand that if you spend over £30 at John Lewis they deliver it free (thanks for Seakay for that bit of info).
Hi,
These are lovely machines, but they aren't proper machines and won't be strong enough to do normal sewing, eg. turn up jeans etc...
They are ideal for paper crafts, light weight fabrics etc...
Ideal for older children to have as a first machines, but not a replacement for a "proper" machine.
I know this becuase, I gave my freinds daughter one last year for Christmas... she loves it!Heidi0 -
If I was starting again, I would go for a reconditioned second hand one. Sewing machine retailers (well not places like JL, one that has its own workshop for repairs) generally have machines that people have part-exed when trading up. You'll get more for your money like this."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I want to get my dd a sewing machine for Xmas, she's at Uni and wants to try her hand at adapting charity shop bargains into fashion! Have seen this one in Argos on special offer at £66 does anyone on here know if its any good? I know nothing about them and don't want to but one if its not worth it.
Thanx in advance for any help

Necchi are a very respected Italian manufacturer. My mum has had a Necchi for nearly 50 years, still going strong. I got the next grade up from this one last year it is solid, reliable and simple to use. It's a good price.0

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to keep ideas together

Hello there.
Reading this thread and looking at different machines, which of the two would you buy? My budget is only £100 or so and I only need a simple machine really and buttonholes. Both these have been mentioned on this thread, but which of the two would you chose?
