Rain Checks in UK Supermarkets?

Hi all,

I was watching a US reality show and they mentioned a service in US supermarkets whereby if you see a product advertised on offer but go to the shop and it is out of stock they can give you a 'rain check' which is a voucher entitling you to buy the same product at the offer price when it is back in stock.

Are these available in any supermarkets or other stores in the UK?

Sainsbury's used to do it a few years back but they didn't make a big deal of it. Not sure if they still do it.

I was offered one when trying to buy 2 for 1 lightbulbs in Tesco and they only had 1 bulb in stock.

I guess this means they have to honour 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 offers when stocks aren't available. not sure about other discounts.

Tesco definately do it. You need to ask at Customer Services.

Tesco have written me out a rain check coupon once, but then refused to accept it when they had the product back in stock. So a bit pointless.

Tried to get a raincheck from Tesco recently for a marge that was on reduced price offer and shelf was empty. Was told that they only do them for multi-buy offer now (i.e. bogof, 3for2).

I was given a £5 voucher on 2 occasions by M&S staff when i couldn't get the dine for 2 deal because they had run out of deserts. So it does happen.

I went to buy a block of cheese recently and as they had none on the shelf i got a voucher from cusomer services. When i went back the following week to use the voucher the staff wouldnt accept it because it was sunny outside. Apparently it has to be raining outside on the day you redeem it for them to honour it?
